A trip to Devipattinam continuation of Our Tamilnadu Exploration FB, N, A

We started around 12PM from Rameshwaram to our next destination Devipattinam. It is a coastal village in Ramanathapuram district of Tamilnadu. This village is famous for the Navagraha Temple or the Thilakeshwar Temple or the Navaprashnam Temple.

We reached around 1.30PM at Devipattinam. We heard a lot about this temple from one of our friend. As it is on the way to our next destination Karaikudi, we plan to visit this historically important place.

People come here to perform the Navagraha pooja. Navagraha means the "nine celestial bodies". These are The Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budha (Mercury), Brihaspati - Dev Guru ( Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (Solar Eclipse) and Ketu ( Lunar Eclipse).

It is believed that Lord Rama installed the nine stones in the sea behind this temple which represents the Navagrahas. These stones can be seen in the morning when the tides are low. Hindus perform religious rites for their deceased ancestors here.

The view of the submerged pillars in the seawater was serene. This area was not crowded. Few people were performing the pooja there. We spent half an hour there and started our journey towards Karaikudi.
