Journey to Rameshwaram - Dhnushkodi FB, N, A

As I informed in my last trip description, from Madhurai I started my journey towards Rameshwaram. We started our journey by 9.30PM and reached by around 12AM, It was a 2.5 hours journey and covered around 175 kilometres.

We can reach Rameshwaram from the mainland by Pamban Road Bridge (Indira Gandhi Road Bridge). It's about 2.3 kilometres long. The view from this road bridge is mindblowing.
Pamban railway bridge is also there parallel to the road bridge.

We stayed in a hotel near the Rameshwaram temple. Because visiting Dhanushkodi and Temple is quite easy.

Early morning 6.30AM we started our journey towards Dhanushkodi. It's around 20kilometres from Rameshwaram. It's advisable to plan the visit before 8AM to avoid tourist crowd and scorching heat.

The way to Dhanushkodi is a small road, on either side bordered by the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal. Driving on the beach road is an awesome experience.

Dhanushkodi is an abandoned town at the South-eastern tip of Pamban Island. This town of fishermen was destroyed during the1964 Rameshwaram Cyclone. Here we can see the remnants of Ram Sethu. The ruins of an old post office, a Church and a hospital are also there. Few fishermen still live in this place. We can see their small huts here.

After playing at the beach for a long time, around 9.30AM we reached back at Rameshwaram.

Rameshwaram is a small town in Pamban Island and it is a famous pilgrimage place. The famous Ramanathaswamy Temple is located here. I used to hear a lot about temple architecture. So this time I thought of exploring this temple and the nearby areas.

This temple is dedicated to the Hindu God Shiva. As per the Hindu epics Rama, Sita and Lakshmana worshipped the Shiva Lingam (Which is made by Sita) here. At this place, Shiva is worshipped as Jyotirlinga (Pillar of light).

There are sixty-four theerthams in and around Rameshwaram. Bathing in these tanks is a major aspect of the pilgrimage to Rameshwaram. People believe that bathing in these Theerthams gives penance (Papamukthi) from Karmadosha.

Near to temple, there is a small area for shoppers where handicrafts are available. The area was crowded as it was a Sunday. After exploring the area we started our journey towards Chettinadu to explore the palatial houses of Chettiyars.
